Noida police’s cyber crime wing has arrested three men and a woman for allegedly duping people in the name of investment through WhatsApp, officials said on Friday.
The fraudsters targeted unsuspecting users by adding them to WhatsApp group and luring them with attractive profits on investments.
Noida’s Cyber ââCrime Police Station arrested accused Kuldeep Giri, Shadab Hussain, Sahil, and Khushi Mohammad from Jalvayu Vihar Stadium Road.
The action came after a complaint filed by one of the fraudsters’ victims, who was duped to the tune of Rs 26.11 lakh, police said.
Sharing details about the scammers’ modus operandi, DCP Cyber ââCrime Noida, Preeti Yadav, said that the fraudsters first lured the victim by getting him some profit after adding him to a WhatsApp group run by them.
After getting the profit, the target person would feel the urge to invest more money. The accused would then send an APK file to the person and gain access to his phone and siphon off funds from their bank account.
The police have frozen the victim’s Rs 6,34,831 and have started the process of returning it.
A case was registered on January 13 on the complaint of the victim in the matter. During the investigation, it was found that a total of 14 complaints have been registered against the accused in states including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Delhi, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, and Telangana.
