OnePlus forays into the world of foldables with its new OnePlus Open, a premium high-end flagship smartphone that folds in half, and also happens to pack the brightest display ever on a smartphone.
The OnePlus Open is arriving at a time when the competition in the premium segment is intensifying with more brands coming out with their foldable devices.
While OnePlus has carved out a space for itself in the premium smartphone segment, cracking the ultra-premium smartphone market, which is rightly dominated by just two brands — Apple and Samsung will be a bit of a task. Here are the five key competitions that OnePlus Open has to face in the premium segment.
Oppo Find N3
Oppo Find N3 looks identical to the OnePlus Open
OnePlus Open’s biggest competition will be none other than its parent company Oppo, which recently announced the Oppo Find N3, a foldable that is exactly identical to the OnePlus Open, with software being the only major difference. For a premium phone of this class, Oppo’s offering seems to have a bit of an advantage with its colour options, which include Gold, and red, which does make the phone look more dashing when compared to the more muted colour options on the OnePlus Open.
However, this won’t be much of an issue, as the Oppo Find N3 is limited to select markets, and in markets like India, OnePlus does seem to have an edge with no direct competition from OnePlus.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5
Galaxy Z Fold5 is one of the mainstream foldable smartphones
Samsung is the OG foldable brand and its fifth edition looks more refined than ever before. Be it the IPX8 rating that no other foldable offers or the speed-binned Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for enhanced gaming performance, there is nothing that comes close to the Galaxy Z Fold5 (review). On top of that, Samsung also offers a top-notch foldable software experience and the phone also offers up to 1 TB of internal storage, which is an added advantage for users who seek a phone with higher internal storage.
Samsung is clearly ahead in the game of foldables, and OnePlus needs to offer a similar if not better user experience if it wants to create some trend in the world of foldables, with the asking price, OnePlus Open does have an advantage over Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, with its slightly affordable pricing.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max
iPhone 15 Pro Max stands out with its premium build, brand value, and camera performance.
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max is clearly the most sorted out premium flagship smartphone of this year, which is likely to keep this medallion until next September. Although it is not a foldable phone, the iPhone 15 Pro Max gives a tough competition to OnePlus Open, which despite being slightly more affordable, might not offer as big of a brand value as Apple.
Not just the branding, even if we look at the features, the iPhone 15 Pro Max (review) currently packs one of the best smartphone camera setups, which includes a new 5x optical zoom lens.
Google Pixel 8 Pro
Pixel 8 Pro is known for its AI capabilities.
The Pixel 8 Pro is the most expensive and advanced phone that Google has ever launched in India. Again, this camera-centric flagship smartphone is also known for its AI prowess, in fact, it is one of the first mainstream smartphones that is capable of running on-device generative AI models. While the OnePlus Open has a Hasselblad-tuned camera, the Google Pixel 8 Pro uses software magic to retouch photos and pictures to make them look sharp and vivid.
Just like the OnePlus Open, the Google Pixel 8 Pro (review) also offers a clean Android experience with very minimal bloatware. In select markets like the US, the OnePlus Open also has to compete against Google Pixel Fold, which isn’t available in India.
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
A candy-bar-style Android flagship
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (review) costs almost as much as the OnePlus Open. Just like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is a regular candy bar-style smartphone. However, for anyone looking for a high-end Android smartphone with no compromise, the Galaxy S23 Ultra comes ahead of the competition and the phone has almost everything that one expects from a premium Android phone.
Just like the OnePlus Open, the Galaxy S23 Ultra also has a periscope zoom lens with up to 10x optical zoom lens. In comparison, the OnePlus Open has a 3x optical zoom and 6x in-sensor zoom, and the phone also offers up to 120x optical zoom.
