Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan have been one of Bollywood’s most iconic and admired couples for over two decades, consistently setting relationship goals for fans across generations.
Known as the King of Romance, Shah Rukh married Gauri in 1991 after dating for some time, and their bond has only grown stronger since then. Their love story is not just one of reel-life chemistry but also one of real-life inspiration. Shah Rukh and Gauri faced their share of challenges before marriage, with their love defying cultural and religious boundaries. In an early episode of Koffee With Karan, Gauri opened up about their relationship, addressing the topic of religious differences. She candidly shared how, despite their union, she had no intentions of converting to Islam, a stance that reflected her strong beliefs and the couple’s commitment to mutual respect and understanding.
During her appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 1 hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar, Gauri Khan spoke candidly about the religious differences between her and Shah Rukh Khan.
Gauri Khan expressed her respect for her husband Shah Rukh Khan’s religion but made it clear that this did not mean she would convert. She further elaborated on how she navigated the differences in their faiths while maintaining a harmonious family life. “There is a balance, I respect Shah Rukh’s religion but that doesn’t mean that I would convert and become a Muslim. I don’t believe in that. I think everybody is an individual and follow their religion. But, obviously there should be no disrespect. Like Shah Rukh would not disrespect my religion as well,” she said.
She revealed that not only did she face some challenges from her family due to their different religions, but she also had her own frustrations with Shah Rukh’s possessiveness. Gauri shared that Shah Rukh, having lost his parents, didn’t have the older generation to guide them, which was something she took on herself.
She also mentioned that in her household, she was the one who took charge of all festivities like Diwali, Holi, and other celebrations. Gauri also talked about the influence of their Hindu traditions on their children, especially Aryan, who seemed to be very close to Shah Rukh. Gauri noted that Aryan had even expressed his identification with Islam, which, when shared with her mother, led to a rather confused reaction.
Shah Rukh and Gauri met each other for the first time at a party for a very short time when he was 18 years old and she was just 14. He tried pursuing her but she kept rejecting him again and again. After having their shares of highs and lows, Shah Rukh and Gauri tied the knot on October 25, 1991. The couple share 3 childre- Aryan, Suhana and AbRam.
Their journey together is a testament to the power of love, compromise, and respect in overcoming obstacles.
