The Congress and the BJP are at loggerheads over the controversy over former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cremation at Nigambodh Ghat.
BJP has instructed their leaders to fiercely counter the Congress narrative in this matter.
The BJP blamed Congress for shrewdly employing communal politics targeting the Delhi assembly elections. The saffron party also reiterated how Congress humiliated former PM Narasimha Rao during his death. The BJP is also planning to use former president Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter’s allegation that the Congress working committee did not pass a condolence resolution when her father died.
At the same time, Congress is planning a strong protest against the central government for allegedly disrespecting Manmohan Singh. Congress also alleged that news agencies other than Doordarshan were not allowed to film the funeral function while the existing cameras solely focused on PM Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah. Congress said that even visuals of Singh’s bereaved family were not included in the live telecast. Manmohan’s family was allotted only three seats in the front row. Congress had to insist on seats for his daughters and other family members.
Congress allegations:
When the national flag was handed over to Manmohan’s wife and the guard of honour was given, the Prime Minister and the ministers did not stand up. Adequate space was not provided for the family around the pyre. The public was excluded from the ceremony. Amit Shah’s convoy blocked the mourning procession. Some of the family members were kept outside and the gate was closed.
“This amounts to insulting the legacy of Manmohan Singh and the Sikh community. Denying his family’s request, the two-time prime minister’s cremation at Nigam Bodh Ghat is a completely arrogant and biased act.” Said Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, who also doubted the attempt was to erase the contributions of Manmohan from the public sphere.
