Tensions escalated in Tamsa Bari, a village in the Sonamura sub-division of Tripura’s Sepahijala District, after the idol of Lord Shani at a bamboo-fenced shrine was discovered dislodged and overturned late on December 31.
Sonamura, located along the India-Bangladesh border, is a diverse region with a mixed population of Hindus and Muslims.
According to locals, the idol, which was worshipped daily by a family, was found damaged and lying upside down. The family alerted nearby residents, who soon gathered at the shrine to examine the situation.
“We alerted our neighbors and elders after discovering the idol in this condition. We have no idea who could be responsible, but we’ve informed local leaders and the police,” said a resident.
Some locals suspected that the act was an attempt to disturb the communal harmony in Sonamura. “Certain individuals are trying to fuel tensions between Hindus and Muslims. This appears to be the work of miscreants with vested interests,” they said.
Sepahijala District Superintendent of Police, Bogati Reddy, spoke to the media about the incident. “After receiving the information, we promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and have launched an investigation. The shrine, situated near the national highway, appears to have been targeted by miscreants who damaged the idol. We are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and will take strict action against them,” he assured.
