Backward classes constitute up to 56.33% of the Telangana population, making the largest chunk in the state, according to the caste survey report released on Sunday.
According to the report, Scheduled Castes (SC) account for 17.43% of the total population while Scheduled Tribes (ST) are 10.45% in the state. There are 15.79% Other Castes (OC) in Telangana.
The survey report has been tabled before a Cabinet sub-committee and will be presented before the Cabinet on February 4, followed by a discussion on the survey in the Assembly on the same day.

As per the report, the population of Backward Classes (BC) in the state is 1,99,85,767, which also includes 35,76,588 Backward Classes Muslims, while the SC population stands at 61,84,319 and ST numbers are at 37,05,929. The Other Classes in Telangana are 44,21,115.
According to the survey, the Muslim population in the state is 44,57,012 – which constitutes nearly 12.56% of the total population of the state. Out of them, BC Muslims are 10.08% while OC Muslims account for 2.48%.
About 96.9% of the households in the state came in the ambit of the survey, covering 3,54,77,554 people in a span of 50 days, according to state minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said at a press conference on Sunday.
Notably, the caste survey was one of the promises by the Congress party in the run-up to the Assembly polls in 2023.
How Was Telangana Caste Census Conducted?
The survey was carried out with the assistance of 94,863 enumerators and 9,628 supervisors across 94,261 enumeration blocks. To ensure swift data processing, 76,000 data entry operators digitised the collected information within 36 days.
According to the government, the findings will contribute to enhancing welfare schemes, expanding job opportunities, and supporting marginalized communities.
Reddy said that Telangana’s process to conduct the caste survey was smoother and more efficient than Bihar’s, where a similar census took place in 2023.
