In a significant development that could impact India’s missile program, China has established a massive radar system in its southwestern Yunnan province, near the Myanmar border. This advanced radar system, reportedly with a range of over 5,000 kilometers, will enable Beijing to conduct extensive surveillance operations over the Indian Ocean and deep into Indian territory.
According to experts, the Large Phased Array Radar (LPAR) in Yunnan is an advanced early-warning system capable of detecting and tracking ballistic missile launches within a 5,000-kilometer radius. This means it can closely monitor India’s missile program by detecting launches deep inside Indian territory. The LPAR is specifically designed for surveillance and allows China to keep an eye on missile tests conducted by India from facilities like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island on the eastern coast, where New Delhi frequently tests advanced ballistic missiles such as Agni-5 and K-4.
Analysts highlight the strategic importance of the Yunnan radar site, noting that the region, located on China’s southwestern coast, is an ideal location for surveillance between the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.
