Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that his soldiers in Ukraine are defending the “national interests” and future of Russia. His comments were made in a video released by the Kremlin on Russia’s Defenders of the Fatherland Day, ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine, which has become the deadliest armed conflict in Europe since World War II.
“Today, at the risk of their lives and with courage, they are resolutely defending their homeland, national interests, and Russia’s future,” Putin said. He emphasized the need to continue improving the combat capabilities of the army and navy, their readiness being an essential component of Russia’s security and a guarantee of its present and future sovereignty.
Putin highlighted the importance of providing his armed forces with “new, modern models” of weapons and equipment. In November 2024, Russian troops fired a previously unknown experimental hypersonic missile called “Oreshnik” against Ukraine. The Russian president’s remarks come at a time of accelerated rapprochement with the United States, following a phone call between Putin and President Donald Trump on January 12.
Since then, the first Russian-American talks have taken place in Saudi Arabia, with the Kremlin expressing its desire to resume dialogue with Washington on all parameters. Putin reiterated his unwavering determination to strengthen Russia’s armed forces in response to a rapidly changing world.
The conflict in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, with Russia claiming it needed to protect itself against the threat of NATO and prevent the organization’s expansion. As the war approaches its third anniversary, the situation remains tense, with both sides suffering significant casualties and widespread devastation.
Putin’s latest statements underscore his commitment to maintaining Russia’s military prowess and safeguarding its national interests. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, as the conflict in Ukraine shows no signs of resolution.
