The Tripura government has set an ambitious target of installing 50,000 solar plants across the state during the financial year 2025, as announced by Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at promoting renewable energy and reducing electricity costs for households.
Progress and Objectives
Speaking at the inauguration of a registration camp for the scheme in the Jirania subdivision, Minister Nath revealed that 12,800 solar plants have already been installed. He emphasized that the scheme’s primary goal is to enable residential families to generate their own electricity using rooftop solar plants, thereby increasing household income and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.
Government Subsidies
The scheme offers substantial subsidies to encourage participation. For instance:
- A 1-kilowatt solar plant, costing ₹65,000, is eligible for a subsidy of ₹33,000.
- A 2-kilowatt solar plant, priced at ₹1,30,000, receives a subsidy of ₹66,000.
- A 3-kilowatt solar plant, costing ₹1,95,000, is eligible for a subsidy of ₹85,800.
These solar plants, with a lifespan of approximately 25 years, can generate around 100 units of electricity per month, significantly reducing household electricity bills. Excess power generated can also be sold back to the grid, providing an additional source of income.
Encouraging Adoption
The state government is organizing camps across Tripura to raise awareness and facilitate registrations for the scheme. Minister Nath urged residents to take advantage of the initiative, highlighting its long-term benefits for both the environment and household finances.
This ambitious project underscores Tripura’s commitment to renewable energy and aligns with India’s broader goals of sustainable development and energy self-reliance. The successful implementation of this initiative could serve as a model for other states to follow.
