The Meghalaya government has decided to strengthen the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) following the recent murder of a tourist in Sohra. The cabinet also approved a major land repurposing initiative to boost tourism infrastructure in the state.
Security Act Strengthening After Sohra Incident
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma announced that the MRSSA will be revisited to prevent criminal activities disguised as tourism. The move comes after the tragic murder of Indore businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, allegedly orchestrated by his wife and accomplices.
Key measures include:
- Mandatory registration of all tourists at homestays, resorts, and hotels.
- Enhanced surveillance through a tourism app tracking visitor movements.
- Stronger enforcement to curb criminal elements posing as tourists.
Major Tourism Land Deal Approved
The cabinet has sanctioned 273.41 acres of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) land for tourism development. The land will be leased to the Tourism Department on a revenue-sharing basis, with key locations selected to maximize tourism potential and accessibility.
Future Outlook
With security measures tightening and tourism infrastructure expanding, Meghalaya aims to balance safety with sustainable tourism growth.
