Following Israel’s massive airstrikes on Iran, which eliminated top Iranian generals, Tehran has swiftly appointed Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari as the interim Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.
Sayyari’s Military Background & Leadership
- Former Iranian Navy Chief (2007–2017) – A seasoned naval commander with extensive experience in maritime warfare.
- Iran-Iraq War Veteran – Played a key role in Operation Morvarid and Operation Samen-ol-A’emeh, sustaining injuries during the Battle of Khorramshahr.
- Strategic Military Planner – Known for his defensive strategies and modernization efforts within Iran’s conventional forces.
Iran’s Leadership Shake-Up After Israeli Strikes
The Israeli operation, dubbed ‘Rising Lion’, targeted Iran’s nuclear and military facilities, killing at least 20 senior commanders, including IRGC Chief Hossein Salami and Armed Forces Chief Mohammad Bagheri. In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Sayyari as the interim military chief and Ahmad Vahidi as the new IRGC commander.
What’s Next for Iran’s Military Strategy?
With Sayyari now leading Iran’s conventional armed forces, experts predict a stronger naval presence in the Persian Gulf and potential retaliatory strikes against Israel. Iran has already warned of “full-force retaliation”, raising concerns over regional escalation.
