In a major push to modernize its energy infrastructure, Tripura is set to upgrade its power transmission and distribution network under a ₹1,800.28 crore project, jointly funded by the Government of India and the World Bank. The initiative, part of the NER Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP), aims to enhance reliability, reduce system losses, and ensure uninterrupted electricity across the state.
⚡ Key Highlights of the Power Upgrade
- New Infrastructure: Construction of 9 new 132 kV substations (8 completed), 34 new 33 kV substations, and over 1,000 km of new transmission lines
- Modernization: Augmentation of existing substations and installation of optical ground wire for better communication
- Implementing Agency: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited
🔧 Live-Line Repair Technology to Minimize Outages
Tripura will soon introduce live-line maintenance technology, allowing technicians to repair power lines without shutting down electricity supply. This cutting-edge system, already in use in other Indian states, will:
- Prevent power cuts during maintenance
- Improve service reliability for hospitals, industries, and households
- Reduce economic losses from outages
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasized that the technology will be deployed first in high-demand and fault-prone zones, with trained technical teams ready for implementation. The state also plans to use drones for tower inspections, and mobile substations to ensure backup during disasters.
🗣️ “Towards a Reliable and Resilient Power Grid”
Minister Nath stated,
“Our goal is to ensure Tripura has a modern, efficient, and uninterrupted power supply system. This initiative aligns with the vision of a developed and self-reliant Tripura.”
The project is expected to significantly benefit both urban and rural consumers, especially in regions like Amarpur, Chelagang, Rangamati, and Malbasa, where new substations are being commissioned.
Stay tuned for updates on rollout timelines and district-wise implementation.
