Narayana Murthy Embraces ChatGPT, Cuts Lecture Prep Time from 30 Hours to Just 5

Infosys co-founder and tech visionary Narayana Murthy has revealed that he now uses ChatGPT, OpenAI’s generative AI tool, to prepare his lectures and speeches—reducing his preparation time from nearly 30 hours to just 5.

In a recent interview with Moneycontrol, the 78-year-old entrepreneur credited his son, Rohan Murty, for introducing him to the AI platform.

“In a matter of five hours, I could improve the draft. In other words, I improved my own productivity by as much as five times,” Murthy said.

🧠 AI as a Productivity Partner, Not a Threat

Murthy emphasized that AI should be viewed as a supportive tool, not a job-stealer. He believes that tools like ChatGPT can help professionals focus on more complex and creative tasks, while automating repetitive work.

“The smartness lies in defining the requirement well. That’s what my son told me—unless you ask the right question, you won’t get the right output,” he added.

💡 Lessons for India’s Tech Industry

Drawing parallels with the introduction of computers in Indian banks during the 1970s, Murthy said AI could similarly boost productivity and create new job opportunities. He urged Indian IT companies to leverage AI for faster coding, fewer errors, and smarter problem-solving.

🎓 A Scholar’s Perspective

Murthy shared his experience while launching a scholarship at IIM Ahmedabad, where he highlighted how AI has transformed his approach to public speaking. Known for his meticulous preparation, he previously spent up to 30 hours crafting each lecture to ensure thematic coherence and impact.
