The sacred Ambubachi Mahayog commenced on Sunday at the revered Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal Hills in Guwahati, marking the start of one of India’s most spiritually significant festivals. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended a warm welcome to pilgrims and spiritual leaders from across the country, calling the event a celebration of Maa Kamakhya’s divine femininity.
“Today marks the beginning of the #Ambubachi Mahayog, an annual celebration of Maa Kamakhya’s divine femininity. I welcome all pilgrims to Assam and wish everyone a divine experience and the choicest blessings of Maa Kamakhya,” CM Sarma posted on X.
🛕 Temple Doors Closed for Ritual Seclusion
The temple’s sanctum sanctorum was closed at 2:56 PM on June 22 to observe the goddess’s annual ritualistic seclusion, believed to symbolize her menstrual cycle. Worship will resume after 3:19 AM on June 26, following the completion of the four-day spiritual observance.

Authorities expect over 12 lakh devotees to visit during the Mahayog. To manage the influx and ensure safety:
- One-way entry system has been implemented
- Visiting hours restricted from 5 AM to 6 PM
- Landslide-prone routes closed, including the Pandu College Road
- Medical camps, community kitchens, and shelters set up across key locations
