On the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party, calling the period one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history. In a series of posts on X, PM Modi accused the then Indira Gandhi-led government of “placing democracy under arrest” and violating the spirit of the Constitution.
PM Modi’s Strong Words on ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’
Marking June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day), the Prime Minister said, “No Indian will ever forget how fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom extinguished, and thousands of political leaders, students, and citizens jailed.” He also criticized the 42nd Constitutional Amendment passed during the Emergency, calling it a blatant attempt to centralize power and suppress dissent.
Salute to the Resistance
PM Modi paid tribute to those who resisted the Emergency, stating that their collective struggle forced the Congress government to restore democracy and call for fresh elections, which it “badly lost.” He emphasized that people from all walks of life and ideologies united to protect India’s democratic fabric.
Commitment to Constitutional Values
Reaffirming his government’s dedication to constitutional principles, Modi said, “We reiterate our commitment to strengthening the Constitution and realizing our vision of a Viksit Bharat.” He urged citizens to remember the lessons of the Emergency to safeguard democracy for future generations.
