Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee has boldly predicted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will fail to secure even 50 seats in the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, a sharp decline from the 77 seats it won in 2021. Speaking at a public meeting in Satgachia, part of his Diamond Harbour constituency, Banerjee said,
“In 2026, BJP’s count will stop below 50. I don’t usually make predictions, but when I do, they come true by God’s grace and people’s love”.
Targeting BJP Leadership and Past Performance
Banerjee launched a scathing attack on BJP leaders Sukanta Majumdar and Suvendu Adhikari, claiming the party’s electoral fortunes have nosedived since Adhikari’s defection from TMC. He also mocked Majumdar’s narrow 9,000-vote win in 2024, contrasting it with his own 7.1 lakh vote margin in Diamond Harbour.
Criticism of Central Government and National Security
The TMC MP didn’t hold back in criticizing the BJP-led central government, particularly over its handling of the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 people were killed. He questioned the Centre’s failure to apprehend the attackers and demanded accountability from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Cultural and Religious Flashpoints
Banerjee also condemned BJP leaders for allegedly mocking the Jagannath Temple project in Digha, calling it an insult to Hindu sentiments. He credited Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for facilitating the temple’s construction and accused the BJP of hypocrisy in its religious posturing.
Setting the Stage for 2026
With the 2026 Assembly elections just a year away, Banerjee’s remarks signal the TMC’s aggressive campaign strategy, positioning itself as the defender of Bengal’s identity and democratic values. He vowed to expose what he called the “Bangla Birodhi BJP” in every household across the state.
