On the 42nd anniversary of India’s historic 1983 Cricket World Cup triumph, legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar paid an emotional tribute to the Kapil Dev-led Indian team, calling their victory the moment that ignited his cricketing dream. Taking to social media on June 25, Tendulkar wrote,

“I was just 10 when India won the World Cup on this day in 1983. That moment sparked a dream, and that dream became my journey”.

1983: A Win That Changed Indian Cricket Forever

India’s underdog victory over the mighty West Indies at Lord’s remains one of the most iconic moments in cricket history. Defending a modest total of 183, India bowled out the two-time champions for 140, clinching a 43-run win and their first-ever World Cup title.

The win not only stunned the cricketing world but also inspired a generation, including a young Tendulkar, who would go on to become one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

A Legacy That Lives On

Tendulkar’s tribute underscores the enduring legacy of the 1983 team, which included stalwarts like Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Madan Lal, Roger Binny, and Sandeep Patil. Their triumph laid the foundation for India’s rise as a global cricketing powerhouse.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly also reflected on the impact of the win, saying,

“Watching Kapil Dev and his team at Lord’s inspired us to take up cricket”.

From Dream to Destiny

Tendulkar, who debuted for India in 1989, went on to play in six World Cups, finally lifting the trophy in 2011—a moment that completed the dream sparked in 1983.
