TMC Distances Itself from Leaders’ Misogynistic Remarks Amid Protests Over Women’s Safety

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has issued a strong public disavowal of controversial remarks made by its own leaders, MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra, following the gang-rape of a law student in Kolkata’s Kasba area. The party’s statement comes amid intensifying opposition protests over the deteriorating state of women’s safety in West Bengal.

🗣️ TMC: “Remarks Made in Personal Capacity”

In a post on X, TMC clarified:

“The remarks by MP Kalyan Banerjee and MLA Madan Mitra concerning the heinous crime were made in their personal capacities. The party unequivocally disassociates itself from their statements and condemns the same.”

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh reiterated the party’s zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against women, highlighting that three suspects have been apprehended, with one more arrested on Saturday. Mobile phones have also been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

🔥 Opposition Hits the Streets

The BJP and CPM staged protests across Kolkata, demanding accountability and improved safety measures for women in educational institutions and workplaces. A BJP-led demonstration at Gariahat intersection led to clashes with police and traffic disruptions in South Kolkata.

The CPM vowed to continue protests until the state ensures comprehensive protection for women, accusing the ruling party of failing to uphold basic safety standards.

🚨 Controversial Statements Spark Outrage

  • Madan Mitra, MLA from Kamarhati, said the incident “sent a message to all girls” not to trust acquaintances on holidays, a remark widely condemned as victim-blaming
  • Kalyan Banerjee questioned how authorities could prevent a rape “if a friend rapes another friend,” drawing criticism for downplaying institutional responsibility

These remarks have triggered widespread backlash, with civil society groups and women’s rights activists calling for disciplinary action against the leaders.

🧠 Political Fallout and Public Sentiment

While TMC has attempted damage control, critics argue that the party must go beyond disowning statements and enforce internal accountability. The incident has reignited debates over gender sensitivity in political discourse and the need for systemic reforms in law enforcement and education safety protocols.

Stay tuned for updates on the investigation and political developments.
