Aamir Khan Opens Up on Post-Divorce Struggles: “I Was Trying to Kill Myself”

In a deeply emotional revelation, Bollywood icon Aamir Khan has shared that he went through a dark and self-destructive phase following his divorce from first wife Reena Dutta in 2002. Speaking in a recent interview with The Lallantop, the actor admitted to daily alcohol abuse and suicidal ideation, saying he would often pass out from drinking and was “trying to kill” himself during that period.

Aamir recalled that the evening he and Reena separated, he finished an entire bottle of alcohol, and for the next 18 months, he drank daily, unable to sleep or function normally.

“Main behosh ho jaata tha daaru peeke (I would lose consciousness due to heavy drinking). I was not even working then. Neither did I care to meet anybody,” he said.

Ironically, this personal turmoil coincided with the release of his landmark film Lagaan, which earned him the title of “Man of the Year” in the media—a label he found painfully ironic.

💔 A Marriage That Began in Love, Ended in Silence

Aamir and Reena, who married in 1986 after a secret romance, were together for 16 years and share two children, Junaid and Ira. Despite the public perception of an amicable split, Aamir revealed that the emotional toll was far greater than what was portrayed in the press.

He previously described their marriage as “impulsive” and admitted that the separation left him in mourning for nearly three years, during which he withdrew from films and social life.

🧠 Mental Health and Healing

Aamir’s candid admission has reignited conversations around mental health in the entertainment industry, especially among men. He emphasized the importance of accepting loss, saying:

“You have to face your losses and accept how important it was for you. Accept that what was once yours is not there now, and how much you will miss it when it isn’t there anymore”.

❤️ Life After Reena

After his divorce, Aamir married Kiran Rao in 2005, with whom he has a son, Azad. They separated in 2021. He is now reportedly in a relationship with Gauri Spratt, whom he recently introduced to the media.
