Ageing causes your body to undergo various changes, and some of these can affect your eyesight. One of the most common vision issues among older adults is age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that can significantly impair central vision. As you age, slight vision changes are expected, but with AMD, these can become much more drastic. Reading a newspaper or your phone may become difficult, as words in the middle of the page seem to fade or warp. Also, once-simple activities like cooking or sewing become frustrating as you struggle to see fine details. These are all signs that the macula, responsible for sharp vision, is deteriorating, making everyday tasks increasingly difficult.
Age-related macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision impairment, particularly affecting older adults, says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director of Dr. Basu Eye Care & Jagat Pharma. “It impacts the macula, the central part of the retina, which is essential for sharp, detailed vision. This condition can severely limit daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces, greatly affecting quality of life,” he adds.
Ayurveda, Dr Basu suggests, can offer solutions for managing AMD and preserving vision. “By addressing the root cause and supporting eye health, Ayurveda provides natural and hopeful approaches for those seeking complementary therapies,” he says.
• Causes of AMD:
Several factors including ageing, genetics, smoking, and a diet lacking in essential nutrients, contribute to the development of AMD. “From an Ayurvedic standpoint, AMD is often associated with an imbalance of the body’s doshas, particularly Pitta dosha, which governs heat and inflammation. Managing this imbalance is crucial for protecting and rejuvenating the eyes,” he suggests.
• Triphala: A blend of three fruits, Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki, Triphala is known to combat oxidative stress, which is a major contributor to AMD, and supports overall retinal health. This traditional Ayurvedic formulation is widely used for its detoxifying and rejuvenating properties.
• Saptamrit lauh: A traditional Ayurvedic formulation that contains iron and other ingredients known for improving vision and reducing eye strain. It is often prescribed to support eye health and treat conditions like AMD.
• Amla: Also known as Indian gooseberry, Amla is a rich source of vitamin C, which helps fight free radicals and protect the eyes from oxidative damage. Its high antioxidant content supports overall eye health, particularly in preventing age-related deterioration.
• Yashtimadhu: Commonly known as licorice root, Yashtimadhu has soothing and protective effects on delicate eye tissues. It is valued in Ayurveda for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, making it useful in managing oxidative damage and promoting eye health, particularly in age-related conditions like AMD.
• Netra tarpana: In this therapy, medicated ghee is applied to the eyes, helping to rejuvenate eye tissues and improve clarity of vision.
• Nasya: The application of medicated oils through the nasal passages helps balance the doshas and strengthens the optic nerves, crucial for vision preservation.
Dietary and lifestyle changes:
Ayurvedic dietary advice focuses on consuming foods that support eye health. “Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as flaxseeds and walnuts, help maintain retinal function. Vitamins A, C, and E, as well as beta-carotene and lutein, found in carrots, spinach, and sweet potatoes, are essential for preserving vision,” shares Dr Basu.
Alongside, lifestyle practices like yoga, especially techniques such as Trataka (focused gazing) and Shanmukhi Mudra (hand gestures to strengthen eye muscles), can further enhance focus and visual clarity, he explains, adding, “Protecting the eyes from strain is also key. Use protective eyewear and take regular breaks from screens to reduce eye fatigue, ensuring long-term vision preservation.”
