Agra’s Fatehabad to Be Renamed Sindoorpuram, Badshahi Bagh as Brahmapuram

In a move aimed at reclaiming cultural identity and shedding colonial-era nomenclature, the Agra Zila Panchayat has passed a resolution to rename Fatehabad town as Sindoorpuram and the Badshahi Bagh area as Brahmapuram. The proposal, introduced by Zila Panchayat Chairperson Dr. Manju Bhadoria, was unanimously approved during a board meeting and will now be forwarded to the Uttar Pradesh state government for final approval.

Historical Context and Symbolism

Fatehabad, located 41 km east of Agra, was originally known as Samugarh and renamed by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb after his 1658 victory over Dara Shikoh. The new name, Sindoorpuram, is inspired by Operation Sindoor, a recent military operation, and symbolizes national pride.

Similarly, Badshahi Bagh, a 17th-century Mughal garden built by Aurangzeb, is proposed to be renamed Brahmapuram, drawing inspiration from the BrahMos missile and Lord Brahma. The garden includes historical structures like the Shahi Masjid and Shahi Talaab, but has long been neglected despite its heritage value.

Political and Cultural Implications

Dr. Bhadoria stated that the current names “symbolize slavery” and that the renaming reflects a broader effort to reclaim indigenous heritage and instill a sense of pride among locals. The proposal also includes renaming the Fatehabad assembly constituency to Sindoorpuram.

Once approved by the state cabinet, the proposal will be sent to the Centre and the Governor for final assent, followed by a gazette notification to formalize the changes.
