Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asserted that the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur was executed at the appropriate time, ensuring the restoration of normalcy in the violence-stricken state. Speaking at the Times Now Summit 2025, Shah emphasized that the situation in Manipur has significantly improved, with peace talks underway between the Meitei and Kuki communities.
Shah highlighted the government’s efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two communities, which have been at odds since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. The unrest, triggered by a Tribal Solidarity March protesting the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.
Addressing concerns about delays in imposing President’s Rule, Shah stated that the decision was made after careful consideration and at a time when both communities were receptive to the intervention. “Unless both communities accept it, President’s Rule would not have been successful. When there was an appropriate time, we imposed it,” he said.
The Home Minister also acknowledged that Manipur has faced ethnic violence in the past, with some conflicts lasting several years. He expressed optimism about the ongoing peace efforts, noting that the situation is gradually moving in a positive direction.
