Amit Shah Highlights Northeast Peace Milestone: 12 Peace Accords Signed, Thousands Reintegrated

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced a significant milestone in the government’s peace-building efforts in the Northeast region of India. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha on March 21, 2025, Shah highlighted the signing of 12 major peace accords since 2019, which have facilitated the surrender of 10,900 militants and their reintegration into mainstream society.

Shah emphasized the transformative impact of these agreements, citing a 71% reduction in insurgency-related incidents, a 60% decline in security forces’ casualties, and an 82% drop in civilian deaths since 2014. He attributed this progress to the government’s proactive engagement with armed groups and its commitment to resolving long-standing disputes.

Among the notable agreements are the 2020 Bru-Reang Agreement, which provided permanent settlement for displaced families in Tripura, and the 2021 Karbi Peace Accord, which ended decades of unrest in Assam’s Karbi Anglong region. Other key accords include the Bodo Peace Accord and the Adivasi Peace Accord, both of which have contributed to stability and development in the region.

Shah also highlighted the government’s efforts to reduce the jurisdiction of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the Northeast by 70%, signaling a shift towards normalcy and trust-building. He praised the youth of Bodoland for embracing education and development, describing their transformation as a testament to the success of the peace initiatives.

The Northeast region, comprising eight states, has historically faced challenges of insurgency and underdevelopment. However, the government’s sustained efforts have paved the way for long-term peace and progress, making the region a focal point for investment and growth.
