Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi on Thursday announced that the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to Apple Inc. in response to multiple consumer complaints. These complaints, lodged via the National Consumer Helpline, reported significant performance issues, including malfunctions and slowdowns of iPhones following the recent iOS 18 software update.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Joshi wrote, “The department, after examining these grievances, has issued a notice to #Apple through the CCPA, seeking a response on the matter.”
The notice has been issued to Apple, seeking an explanation regarding the reported technical problems that followed a recent software update on iPhones. According to news agency PTI, complaints related to performance issues have been reported to the National Consumer Helpline. This notice marks the latest instance of regulatory scrutiny on Apple’s operations in India, a key growth market for smartphone manufacturers.
Last year, the central government issued a warning to some Apple users about two software vulnerabilities that posed a significant risk, including the potential for unauthorized access, data theft, or hackers gaining control of the affected systems.
According to an advisory from the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, a ‘high’ severity issue has been identified, affecting Intel-based Mac systems, including devices running macOS, iOS, and iPadOS.
Previously, the Centre had raised concerns over several vulnerabilities found in Apple products, including iPhones, which could potentially lead to spoofing or the leakage of sensitive information from these devices.
Last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook highlighted India’s significant contribution to the global success of iPhone sales. However, recent reports from last week revealed that Apple’s global iPhone sales had dropped by 5% in the final quarter of 2024. This decline was attributed to lacklustre upgrades and increased competition from Chinese brands. As a result, the iPhone’s market share fell to 18% in 2024, with companies like Xiaomi and Vivo leading the charge to capture a larger share of the market.
