Assam-Arunachal Border Talks Near Resolution in Six Disputed Districts: Khandu

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced significant progress in resolving the long-standing border disputes between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Speaking during the ongoing session of the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly on Monday, Khandu expressed optimism that the boundary demarcation in six disputed districts would be finalized soon.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the Namsai Declaration, signed on July 15, 2022, which laid the groundwork for resolving inter-state boundary issues. The six districts under review include Pakke Kessang, Papum Pare, Kamle, Lower Siang, Lower Dibang Valley, and Longding. Regional committees from both states have been conducting joint inspections to expedite the resolution process.

Home Minister Mama Natung informed the Assembly that the reconstituted regional committees held their first meetings in September last year. He added that boundary disputes in five other districts—West Kameng, East Siang, Lohit, Tirap, and Namsai—have already been resolved. Discussions regarding Changlang district are expected to commence soon, despite initial opposition from Assam.

Khandu emphasized that the disputes are being resolved amicably through an out-of-court settlement, reflecting the proactive efforts of both states to maintain peace and harmony along the 804.1-km inter-state boundary. A joint report detailing recent developments and recommendations is awaited, marking a crucial step toward finalizing the boundary demarcation.

The resolution of these disputes is expected to strengthen relations between the two northeastern states and pave the way for enhanced cooperation and development in the region. Further updates are anticipated as the joint committees continue their work.
