In a strong response to drug trafficking in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the activities of drug traffickers following the destruction of 170 bighas of illegal poppy cultivation in Goalpara.
The operation, which took place in January, resulted in the elimination of crops valued at approximately ₹27.20 crore and is part of Assam’s ongoing anti-drug initiative.
Sarma said that the operation was a landmark in dismantling what he referred to as a “planned Udta Assam party,” pointing out that the state wants to get rid of drug-related activities. In his official X account, he directly targeted the drug peddlers saying, “Sorry to ruin your planned Udta Assam party!… So next time you think of drugs, think of Assam police first.”
The destruction of illicit poppy cultivation is a comprehensive measure of the Assam government to fight the menace of drug abuse and dismantling the network of trafficking. The police have stepped up operations in conjunction with local security forces to foil drugs-related activities in the state.
As the Assam police head this campaign, statements by Sarma are a kind of stern warning to those trading in drugs that the government would not tolerate such illegal activities under any circumstances. This effort, currently underway, shows a sense of responsibility towards the protection and well-being of members in the society in dealing with the growing issues concerning substance abuse in the region.
