In a landmark move, the Assam government has announced the introduction of India’s first AI-driven, blockchain-based tea auction system, aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and security in the tea trade. The initiative, unveiled during the Assam Budget 2025-26, is set to revolutionize the auctioning process, ensuring fair pricing and tamper-proof transactions.
Key Features of the System
The AI-powered platform will integrate blockchain technology, widely recognized for its decentralized and transparent nature. This will eliminate fraud, ensure fair bidding, and provide immutable records of transactions. The system also aims to address the subjectivity in tea quality evaluation by leveraging AI for precise and unbiased assessments.
Industry Response
The initiative has been widely welcomed by stakeholders, including the North East Tea Association (NETA). NETA advisor Bidyananda Barkakoty praised the move, stating, “This digital platform will strengthen Assam’s position as a global leader in the tea industry.” He also emphasized the need for a phased implementation to avoid disruptions in trade.
Additional Budget Provisions
The Assam Budget 2025-26 also includes measures to support tea garden workers, such as:
- Extension of Green Leaf Cess Exemption: The exemption, first introduced in 2022, has been extended for another two years.
- Welfare Initiatives: Allocation of ₹109 crore for mobile creches and toilet units in tea gardens, along with a one-time financial assistance of ₹5,000 for workers.
- Healthcare Improvements: Launch of the “Healthy Garden Population Comprehensive Health Screening” initiative in 20 tea gardens.
A Step Toward Modernization
With Assam producing approximately 680 million kilograms of tea annually, this initiative is expected to modernize the auctioning process and boost the state’s tea industry. The government’s focus on leveraging technology underscores its commitment to innovation and economic growth.
This transformative step not only highlights Assam’s rich tea legacy but also sets a precedent for other states to adopt technology-driven solutions in traditional industries.
