At Trump’s swearing-in reception, Nita Ambani steals the show in a traditional Kanchipuram silk saree

At the glittering pre-inauguration reception held for President-elect Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., where top billionaires and political leaders gathered with their partners, all eyes were on power dressing trends. Among the sea of fashion forward billionaires, one figure shone brighter than the rest was Indian businesswoman Nita Ambani, who draped an extraordinary custom-made Kanchipuram silk saree. As the world watched Donald Trump take the oath of office as the 47th President of the United States, Nita Ambani, through her sartorial choices, reminded us of the beauty and richness of Indian culture. She not only added a dazzling touch to the evening but also brought the soul of India to one of the world’s most powerful stages, offering a powerful message of cultural pride and unity.

Renowned for her impeccable sartorial choices, Nita Ambani once again captivated the global audience with a nine-yard masterpiece crafted by National Award-winning artisan B. Krishnamoorthy. Her saree not only celebrated Indian heritage but also showcased the brilliance of traditional craftsmanship on the world stage. The saree, woven with intricate care, was a visual feast, with motifs drawn from the spiritual and historical treasures of Kanchipuram’s grand temples.

Rich in cultural symbolism, her saree featured over 100 meticulously chosen designs, including the revered Iruthalaipakshi, a double-headed eagle representing Lord Vishnu, the Mayil, symbolising immortality and divinity, and the mythical Sorgavasal animal trails, reflecting the charm of India’s vibrant folklore.

What set this saree apart was not only its design but the intense research and thought that went into its creation. The sari was produced by Swadesh, a name synonymous with excellence in traditional Indian textiles. The company’s commitment to preserving the rich heritage of Kanchipuram weaving was evident in every thread of this custom piece, and Nita Ambani’s choice to wear it at such a high-profile event underlined her unwavering support for Indian artisans and crafts.

Paired with the saree was a velvet blouse designed by designer Manish Malhotra. The velvet blouse, with a built-up neckline and exquisite beadwork along the sleeve hem, was the perfect balance of contemporary and traditional aesthetics. The luxurious fabric and attention to detail reflected Malhotra’s signature style, adding a touch of glamour to the timeless elegance of the sari. No detail was spared in Nita’s ensemble. She completed her look with a 200-year-old parrot-shaped pendant, an Indian treasure encrusted with emeralds, rubies, diamonds, and pearls. Crafted using the ancient Kundan technique, the pendant was set in gold with red and green enamel work, making it not just an accessory but a statement piece of heritage jewellery. The pictures of her final look were shared on Swadesh’s official page.

For Nita Ambani, to wear a Kanchipuram silk saree at a historic event such as the Trump reception was a nod to the legacy of Indian weaving traditions, highlighting the delicate art form’s importance in today’s fashion world. Alongside her, husband Mukesh Ambani exuded sophistication in a sleek black tuxedo, featuring silk shawl lapels, padded shoulders, and full-length sleeves. His elegant yet understated look complemented Nita’s grand presence, further enhancing the couple’s aura of grace and poise
