Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has expressed his disapproval of persistent disputes over temple-mosque issues. Terming such religious debates as “unacceptable,” he emphasised the importance of focusing on unity and harmony. He also highlighted the need to avoid politicising sensitive topics that threaten social cohesion.
In response, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), known for leading the Ram Janmabhoomi temple movement, responded to Bhagwat’s remarks. Surendra Jain, the joint general secretary of the VHP, clarified the organisation’s position, stating:”We declared in 1984 that we aim to reclaim only three temples—Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya, and the temples in Kashi and Mathura. We fought a long legal and social battle for Ram Janmabhoomi. However, since that time, we, as an organisation, have not spearheaded any new temple movements.”
Jain also referred to the 1978 closure of temples in Sambhal, which was brought to light by the administration rather than any social organisation. Speaking to News18, he addressed the ongoing struggles in Kashi and Mathura, suggesting that even Muslim leaders should now acknowledge the historical role of invaders in such disputes. He added, “We fought and reclaimed Ayodhya, but we have not actively participated in any new movements since. What we see now are spontaneous appeals by society, driven by individual citizens raising these issues.”
At the inauguration of the Hindu Sewa Mahotsav in Pune, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for unity and warned against divisive politics and majoritarian supremacy. Commenting on the Ram Temple’s construction, he said, “Building the Ram Temple was a matter of faith for Hindus, but it does not make one a Hindu leader. The Ram Temple is a matter of faith for all Indians.”
Bhagwat also urged people to move beyond historical grievances and avoid fostering hatred or enmity. He called for refraining from creating new contentious issues related to temples and mosques.
The Hindu Sewa Mahotsav was organised by the Hindu Aadhyatmik Sewa Sanstha, is being held at the Shikshan Prasarak Mandali’s college ground in Pune and will continue until December 22.
