Ayushman Bharat Scheme Rolled Out in Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta Allocates ₹2,144 Crore

New Delhi: In a landmark move, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in Delhi, allocating ₹2,144 crore for the flagship healthcare scheme. This marks the first time the national capital has adopted the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance program, fulfilling a key election promise by the BJP-led government.

The scheme, which provides ₹5 lakh insurance coverage under the central government initiative, will now receive an additional ₹5 lakh top-up from the Delhi government, offering a total of ₹10 lakh health insurance coverage to economically weaker families. CM Gupta emphasized the government’s commitment to modernizing healthcare services, stating, “This is a historic day for Delhi. We are determined to build a robust, modern healthcare system that serves everyone efficiently.”

Delhi becomes the 35th state or Union Territory to adopt AB-PMJAY, which aims to benefit approximately 55 crore individuals nationwide, covering the bottom 40% of India’s population. The scheme provides cashless treatment for secondary and tertiary care hospitalizations, including critical procedures such as cardiac surgeries, cancer treatments, and knee replacements.

The rollout of AB-PMJAY in Delhi was announced during CM Gupta’s maiden budget presentation, which unveiled a ₹1 lakh crore budget for the financial year 2025-26. The budget also includes ₹6,874 crore for the overall health sector, facilitating the establishment of 400 wellness centers and the introduction of “Ayushman Arogya Mandirs” to enhance community health services.

This development is expected to significantly improve healthcare accessibility for Delhi residents, aligning with the government’s vision of “Viksit Delhi.” The scheme’s implementation follows the BJP’s landslide victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, marking a new era in the capital’s healthcare landscape.

Stay tuned for updates on the impact of this transformative initiative.
