It would be a boost for the Indian Navy as INS Vagsheer is all set to join the fleet in January 2025, sources said. INS Vagsheer is designed as a hunter-killer submarine under Project 75.
INS Vagsheer is the sixth submarine of the first batch of six Kalvari-class submarines. It will strengthen India’s maritime dominance and will act as a resistance if China or Pakistan pose any threat to the country. The submarine is named after the deep-sea predator Sand Fish.
The submarine was launched on 20 April 2022 from the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The submarine is equipped with the latest navigation and tracking system. It is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.
Under project-75, five submarines have been commissioned in the country’s security. After Vagsheer’s inclusion, the Indian Navy’s dominance in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) will enhance. It is capable of performing several missions like anti-surface, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, area surveillance and mine-laying.
The size of the submarine is 221 ft long and its height is 40 ft. Its speed underwater is 35 km/hr and 20 km/h on sea surface. The submarine is capable of carrying out stealth and precisions attacks.
