Authorities in Bangladesh arrested Hindu religious leader Krishna Das Prabhu on Monday at Dhaka Airport, preventing him from leaving the country and transferring him to an unidentified location.
According to Kanchan Gupta, senior advisor to the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Krishna Das Prabhu, also known as Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, is a Hindu leader and member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
“Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari was charged with sedition after he led a massive rally of Hindus protesting targeted hate attacks and protection from Islamists. (The) tallest leader of the Hindu community is believed to have been taken to the Detective Branch of Yunus Regime,” Gupta said in a social media post on X.
Bangladeshi Hindu organisations have also asserted that the ISKCON leader was taken into custody.
Social media was quick to react to the news, with Radharaman Das tweeting, “I just received the shocking news that Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a Hindu monk & the face and leader of Bangladeshi minorities in this difficult times, has been arrested by the Dhaka police and taken to an undisclosed location. Kind attention @ihcdhaka @DrSJaishankar #SaveBangladeshiHindus.”
Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, had earlier this year called the attacks on minority Hindus in his nation “exaggerated” and questioned how India was portraying the problem.
