The Russian government, led by Vladimir Putin, has proposed upgrades to its fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, the Su-57E, for India. The updates include hypersonic weapons, advanced stealth features, and new avionics along with the fighter aircraft. According to the reports, the Russian government is willing to reduce the price of the aircraft and accept payments in Indian rupees.
However, it is important to note that India has remained cautious and has not yet revealed its position.
Why is India cautious about Russian aircraft?
The main concern of India regarding the Russian aircraft is related to the technology transfer, reliability of new engines, and the potential impact of this acquisition on India’s own fifth-generation fighter aircraft program, AMCA.
Currently, India does not possess a fifth-generation aircraft. Given the rapidly growing airpower of China and Pakistan, India recognizes the need for cutting-edge technology to maintain air superiority.
In addition to this, a significant portion of the Indian Air Force’s current fleet is getting old, hence it is important to replace them with more capable, modern aircraft. India’s AMCA program is seen as a long-term solution, while interim measures are required to address immediate security gaps.
Strength of the Russian Fighter Jet

• The Russian stealth fighter is equipped with advanced avionics, including an AESA radar and electronic warfare systems.
• The Su-57E’s engine is promised to deliver improved supercruise capability and enhanced thrust vectoring.
