With the Assam Panchayat elections scheduled for May 2 and May 7, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its campaign across the state, aiming for a landslide victory. The elections will see 1.8 crore voters elect 21,920 gram panchayat members, along with other local representatives.
BJP’s Strategy
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been leading the charge, emphasizing the party’s focus on development and stability. Sarma highlighted initiatives like Orunodoi, Mahila Udyamita, and Nijut Moina, positioning them as transformative steps for Assam’s progress. The BJP has already secured 37 Zila Parishad seats and 288 Anchalik Panchayat seats unopposed, showcasing its dominance.
Opposition’s Challenges
The Congress-led Opposition alliance has struggled to unite, with internal conflicts and leadership tussles weakening their campaign. Congress leaders have accused the BJP of using money power and intimidation tactics to force candidates to withdraw nominations. Despite these allegations, the BJP remains confident of sweeping the polls.
Political Implications
The Panchayat elections are seen as a precursor to the 2026 Assembly elections, with both BJP and Congress vying to strengthen their grassroots presence. While the BJP projects itself as a party of progress, the Congress has targeted agrarian issues and promised loan waivers for farmers.
