Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has confirmed that an investigation is underway into allegations of bribery against certain faculty members of Tripura Medical College. Addressing media queries after an event on Sunday, Dr. Saha emphasized that authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
“When I received the information, I instructed that action be taken as per the law. If such things are happening, they must stop. However, we cannot accept this, and an investigation is underway,” Dr. Saha stated.
The Crime Branch unit of Tripura Police is investigating the allegations of “cash for pass” at Tripura Medical College, Hapania. Police sources confirmed that the investigation aims to identify the masterminds behind exam-related malpractices based on the allegations.
The investigation is in its initial stages, according to an official who wished to remain anonymous. Sources claim that the allegations directly relate to exams conducted at the private medical college. Students already pay hefty fees to enroll in the MBBS course and complete their graduation from the college.
Sources alleged that some faculty members and top Tripura University officials demanded significant amounts from students for passing exams. Those who failed to clear their back papers despite multiple attempts were reportedly targeted and persuaded to pay for an easy pass. Tripura University sets the question papers for the college and evaluates them.
Further allegations suggest that individuals in influential positions at both institutions are taking advantage of the situation. Authorities reportedly asked students to pay Rs 2 lakh to Rs 5 lakh to clear back papers unfairly. While some students complied with these demands, others strongly objected.
The Crime Branch unit of Tripura Police has registered a specific case and initiated the investigation. Some individuals have reportedly been questioned in connection with the case. However, police officials have refrained from making any official statements as the investigation is high-profile.
The opposition Congress party has demanded an independent probe into the allegations of corruption at Tripura Medical College.
