Coal India Reports Marginal Decline in May Production, Offtake Remains Steady

State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) has reported a 1.3% year-on-year decline in coal production for May 2025, with output totaling 63.5 million tonnes (MT), compared to 64.4 MT in the same month last year.

Production & Offtake Trends

Despite the slight dip in production, coal offtake remained steady at 64.0 MT, marking a modest increase from 63.9 MT recorded in May 2024.

For the April–May 2025 period, cumulative coal production stood at 125.6 MT, marginally lower than 126.2 MT in the same period last year—a 0.5% decline. However, coal offtake rose to 128.5 MT, reflecting a 1.8% year-on-year increase.

Subsidiary Performance

Among CIL’s subsidiaries, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) led production with 17.9 MT, followed by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) with 13.8 MT. Meanwhile, North Eastern Coalfields (NEC) reported no production or offtake for the month.

Coal India continues to focus on enhancing production efficiency and meeting domestic demand, with plans to increase output and offtake in FY26. The company remains a key player in India’s energy sector, supplying over 80% of the country’s coal needs.
