Senior Congress leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, has raised serious concerns over what he describes as a “disturbing collapse” of law and order in Assam. Speaking after visiting Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh at Morigaon District Jail, Gogoi accused the state government of turning Assam into a “police state” where intimidation and miscarriage of justice have become the norm.
Reetam Singh, who has been arrested multiple times in recent weeks, is currently detained on charges stemming from politically charged social media posts. Gogoi criticized the repeated arrests as a targeted campaign against opposition voices, stating, “Over the past few days, Congress spokesperson Reetam Singh has been relentlessly targeted and implicated in one case after another. This is a clear misuse of power.”
During his visit, which coincided with the Assamese New Year, Gogoi extended his solidarity to Singh by bringing traditional sweets, symbolizing cultural and moral support. He emphasized that the deteriorating law and order situation is not just a political issue but a matter of public concern, urging ordinary citizens to speak up against what he termed as “state-sponsored intimidation.”
The Assam government has yet to respond to these allegations. However, Gogoi’s remarks have sparked a political debate, with opposition parties rallying behind his claims and calling for accountability from the ruling administration.
This development adds to the growing discourse on governance and justice in Assam, as the state grapples with allegations of political bias and misuse of law enforcement. Stay tuned for further updates on this unfolding story.
