Gaurav Gogoi Criticizes Assam Government’s Decision on Arms Licences

Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi has strongly condemned the BJP-led Assam government’s decision to grant arms licences to indigenous people in vulnerable and remote areas. Gogoi labeled the move a “dangerous step towards lawlessness and jungle raj”, urging Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to reverse the decision immediately.

Gogoi’s Concerns Over Public Safety

Gogoi argued that instead of strengthening police and border forces, the government is arming civilians, which could lead to gang violence and crimes based on personal vendettas. He emphasized that the people of Assam deserve jobs, affordable healthcare, and quality education—not guns.

Assam Government’s Justification

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the policy, stating that Assamese people in certain areas have been feeling insecure and have been demanding arms licences for a long time. He assured that the licences would be issued only to original inhabitants belonging to indigenous communities.

Political and Social Implications

The decision has sparked controversy, with opposition leaders warning that it could escalate violence and undermine law enforcement. Gogoi insisted that the move reflects electoral concerns rather than public safety, calling for responsible leadership to restore public trust.
