Former cricketer and current India head coach Gautam Gambhir has addressed the exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, set to begin on June 20, 2025 in Leeds. Despite Iyer’s stellar form in IPL 2025, he was left out of the 18-member squad, a decision that has sparked debate among fans and experts.
Gambhir’s Response to Iyer’s Omission
When asked about Iyer’s absence from the squad, Gambhir responded tersely, stating, “I am not a selector.” His remark has fueled speculation about whether the decision was influenced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, who had earlier explained that while Iyer performed well in ODIs and domestic cricket, there was no room for him in the Test squad.
Shreyas Iyer’s Recent Performance
Iyer has been in exceptional form, leading Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 playoffs and delivering consistent performances. His Ranji Trophy season was equally impressive, scoring 480 runs in five matches with an average of 68.57, including two centuries.
India’s Squad for England Tour
The Indian Test squad, led by Shubman Gill, includes key players such as Rishabh Pant (vice-captain), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj. The series will commence at Headingley, Leeds, followed by matches at Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford, and The Oval.
