A fresh political storm has erupted in Rajasthan after former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot alleged a conspiracy within the BJP to remove current Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma. Speaking in Jodhpur on June 25, Gehlot claimed that leaders from both Rajasthan and Delhi are orchestrating a plan to unseat Sharma, a first-time MLA who assumed office in 2023.
“CM Surrounded by Flatterers, Unaware of Ground Reality”: Gehlot
Gehlot expressed concern that Sharma is “unaware of what’s happening around him”, warning that sycophants within the BJP are misleading him while plotting his downfall.
“He’s a young leader with a rare opportunity. Instead of supporting him, his own party is trying to pull him down,” Gehlot said.
He also criticized the BJP government for failing to address public grievances, citing delays in pensions, NREGA wages, and power and water shortages.
BJP Hits Back, Accuses Gehlot of Misdirection
The BJP leadership responded sharply, dismissing Gehlot’s remarks as baseless and politically motivated. Deputy CM Diya Kumari, Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, and others accused Gehlot of diverting attention from Congress’s internal leadership crisis.
CM Bhajanlal Sharma, who won the Sanganer seat in 2023 by over 48,000 votes, countered Gehlot’s claims, stating:
“Let the people compare our 1.5 years of governance with Congress’s five-year term. We’ve delivered results, not slogans”.
Political Implications Ahead of 2028 Polls
Gehlot’s remarks have intensified political tensions in Rajasthan, with the Congress aiming to capitalize on perceived BJP infighting, while the ruling party projects unity and performance. The episode also underscores the fragile balance of power within the BJP, especially with Sharma’s rapid rise as a first-time MLA and CM.
