Google hosted its Made By Google event in New York last week and unveiled the Google Pixel 8 and the Google Pixel 8 Pro. The phones will go on sale in India on October 12 and pre-orders for them are already open.
Later this year, Google is also expected to launch the Google Pixel 8a. While the Google Pixel 8a will be relatively cheaper than the vanilla Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the company has no plans for making a Pixel phone that will cost under Rs 20,000.
No cheaper Pixel phone from Google
According to a report in Tech Radar originally attributed to Der Standard, Google’s VP of mobile business, Nanda Ramachandran, said that the company doesn’t plan on coming up with a cheaper version of the Pixel phones anytime soon. The reason behind this is that launching a cheaper phone would require certain ‘compromises’ and Google is not ready to do so.
“We would have to make too many compromises for that,” he said.
Talking about the Google Pixel 8, the phone’s price starts from Rs 75,999 and it is available in two storage options – 128GB and 256 GB. The 256 GB storage variant costs Rs 82,999. Pre-ordering of the phones began on October 5, and Flipkart had announced an attractive pre-ordering deal by offering a bank discount of up to Rs 8,000 on the Pixel 8, and up to Rs 9,000 on the Pixel 8 Pro. The bank offers are for ICICI, Kotak Mahindra and Axis Bank customers.
Google Pixel 8: Top specs
The Google Pixel 8 packs a design similar to its predecessors. However, there are subtle changes. The edges of the Google Pixel 8 are curvier and the phone is a bit smaller when compared to the Pixel 7. The phone has a glass and aluminium built and has a 6.2-inch Actua display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The phone offers 2,000 nits of peak brightness and Gorilla Glass Victus protection. The display has “real-world clarity and is 42 per cent brighter than Pixel 7’s display.”
The phone is powered by Google’s next-gen processor, the Tensor G3 chipset. Google Pixel 8 promises major upgrades in terms of camera. The phone sports a triple camera setup with a 50-megapixel Octa-PD main camera, 8x Super-Res digital zoom and a 12-megapixel sensor with autofocus and Macro abilities. In the front, there is a 10.5-megapixel camera for selfies and video calls.
Talking about battery, the Pixel 8 packs a 4,575 mAh battery supporting 27W fast wired charging. Google has also added support for 18W wireless charging, without a charger included in the retail package.
