Himanta Sarma’s ‘Pakistan’ dig at Congress over its stand on Israel-Hamas war

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday hit out at the Congress over their resolution on the Israel-Palestine war and compared the party with Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters in Jorhat, Sarma said the Congress should have condemned the terrorist attacks by Hamas and then could have spoken about Palestine. “But in their resolution, they only talked about Palestine, just like Pakistan,” he said.

In a swipe at the Congress, the Chief Minister asked whether the party with such statements “wanted to form a government in India or Pakistan”.

Sarma’s response came days after the Congress Working Committee (CWC), the party’s highest-decision-making body, expressed its “dismay and anguish” over the war. The resolution underlined its support of the Palestinian people’s right to “land (and) self-government, and to live with dignity and respect”.

Assam Congress chief Bhupen Borah hit back at Sarma, saying he was a “liar”.

In an exclusive conversation with Indiatoday.in, Bora said, “The Israeli government has not yet confirmed whether Hamas has killed children or not. The first statement of a message released by Jairam Ramesh is- ‘The Indian National Congress condemns the brutal attacks on the people of Israel.'”

“As usual, just like his boss (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi, the Chief Minister is lying. Lying has become the second nature of Himanta Biswa Sarma,” Borah added.

The multi-pronged attacks against Israel by Hamas from Gaza since Saturday and the subsequent Israeli retaliation have left hundreds dead. Israel has launched a massive counter-offensive in Gaza to avenge the attacks by Hamas.

On the sixth day, the Israeli military said more than 1,300 people, including 222 soldiers, were killed in Israel. In Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, over 1,400 people have been killed in Israel’s offensive against the Palestinian group, according to authorities there.
