Kolkata’s iconic Second Hooghly Bridge witnessed a political drama on Friday night when Bengal minister Babul Supriyo and BJP MP Abhijit Ganguly got embroiled in an altercation. The incident occurred as Supriyo was on his way back to his residence in Howrah, when he became annoyed by persistent honking from the car behind him.
Sources said an agitated Babul Supriyo halted his vehicle and approached the car behind him, demanding an explanation for the erratic driving. He found out that the vehicle belonged to BJP MP Abhijit Ganguly, who was seated at the back of the car.
Witnesses said a tense confrontation ensued, with Supriyo vocally expressing concern about the dangerous driving. Videos of the incident showed a huge crowd near Abhijit Ganguly’s vehicle as the dramatic episode played out on the bridge.
Matters escalated when Supriyo accused Ganguly of using abusive language during the altercation. An irate Supriyo demanded a formal apology, asserting that such behaviour was unacceptable. Ganguly, however, remained silent as Supriyo vowed to escalate the matter through appropriate official channels.
The situation drew the attention of bystanders and was soon brought under control by police officers who were on duty nearby.
