The diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan have resulted in the cricket teams of both nations not engaging in bilateral cricket tours. They only compete against each other in ICC or continental tournaments. The last bilateral series between the two teams was held in 2012-13 when Pakistan toured India for five white-ball matches. On the other hand, India hasn’t toured Pakistan since 2005-06. The BCCI has also refused to send their team across the border for two major tournaments, including the Asia Cup in 2023 and the ongoing Champions Trophy, with India playing all their matches at a neutral venue as per a Hybrid Model.
In a recent interview on the Pakistani cricket show ‘Dressing Room’ on Sports Central, Sunil Gavaskar was asked about the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between India and Pakistan. Gavaskar emphasized that unless there is peace at the borders, discussions about resuming bilateral cricket cannot take place.
“By frankly having peace at the borders. It’s very simple. If there’s peace at the borders, then I think both governments will certainly say, ‘Look, okay, we’ve had no incidents, nothing at all. So let’s at least start with talking,'” Gavaskar said.
He further added, “I’m pretty certain there will be some back-channel connections going on. But you want to see what’s happening both on the ground and off the ground because of the fact that there are incursions we hear about. That’s the reason why the Indian government is saying, ‘Look, maybe until all that stops, we should not even look at having or talking about anything.'”
India recently faced Pakistan in a Group A match of the Champions Trophy, where the Rohit Sharma-led side maintained their domination by securing a comfortable six-wicket win. Pakistan has not beaten India in ODIs since the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy. India has won six of their seven matches since then, with one producing no result.
India has qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025, while Pakistan has crashed out without winning a single game.
Stay tuned for further updates on the India vs Pakistan bilateral cricket series and the Champions Trophy 2025.
