India has officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, calling it a vital step toward restoring peace in the Middle East. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement on June 24, emphasizing that “there is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy” to resolve the region’s complex conflicts.
India Commends US-Qatar Mediation
The MEA acknowledged the role played by the United States and Qatar in brokering the fragile truce, which brought an end to a 12-day conflict marked by missile strikes and retaliatory attacks. India expressed hope that all parties involved would work toward sustained peace and stability.
Deep Concern Over Regional Security
While welcoming the ceasefire, India also voiced concern over the broader implications of the conflict. The MEA noted the escalation involving US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iran’s retaliation targeting American military bases in Qatar. These developments, it said, posed serious risks to regional security.
India Ready to Support Peace Efforts
Reiterating its commitment to global peacebuilding, India stated it is “ready to play its part” in supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at long-term stability in the region. The government also highlighted the safe evacuation of over 2,800 Indian nationals from conflict zones under Operation Sindhu.
Strategic and Humanitarian Stakes
With millions of Indians living and working in West Asia and a significant portion of India’s energy imports coming from the region, New Delhi has a vested interest in maintaining peace. The ceasefire has also allowed India to wind down emergency operations, including the closure of its temporary contact desk in Mashhad, Iran.
