India’s Defence Ministry is set to approve a ₹30,000 crore proposal for procuring three regiments of indigenous Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QR-SAM) systems, significantly enhancing the Army’s air defence capabilities.
🔴 Key Highlights:
- QR-SAM systems are highly mobile, designed to intercept enemy fighters, helicopters, and drones within a 25-30 km range.
- Developed by DRDO, these missile systems have undergone extensive testing under day and night operational scenarios.
- Bharat Electronics and Bharat Dynamics will co-produce the QR-SAM systems.
- The Army Air Defence (AAD) requires 11 regiments, but the initial procurement will focus on three regiments.
- QR-SAM complements India’s existing air defence network, which includes S-400 Triumf (380 km range), Barak-8 (70 km), Akash (25 km), and Igla-S shoulder-fired missiles (6 km).
📢 Defence Experts’ Take:
- QR-SAM systems can operate on the move, providing tactical air defence for tanks and infantry combat vehicles.
- India’s air defence successfully intercepted Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles during Operation Sindoor (May 7-10), proving the need for advanced missile systems.
⚠️ Strategic Impact:
- Strengthens India’s air defence against aerial threats, especially along western and northern borders.
- Enhances India’s ability to counter drone warfare, a growing challenge in modern military conflicts.
