Infosys Developing Software Layer to Reduce GPU Dependence for AI Workloads

Infosys, a leading software company, is developing a software layer aimed at minimizing reliance on graphics processing units (GPUs) for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. This initiative comes amid a surge in demand for high-performance chips, resulting in rising costs and deployment delays.

“Not every workload needs a GPU. We are working on a software layer that ensures AI models can run efficiently on commodity hardware, reducing the need for expensive and scarce GPUs,” stated Satish HC, Executive Vice President and Chief Delivery Officer of Infosys, at the NASSCOM Technology and Leadership Forum 2025 (NTLF) in Mumbai on February 25.

The increasing dependency on GPUs for AI processing power has been a significant challenge for enterprises. Infosys has been proactive in addressing this issue. “One of the things that we are very proud of sharing is that we have already built four models for our business within Infosys,” Satish added. On January 16, Infosys announced the development of four small language models (SLMs) tailored for specific tasks or industries, utilizing less data and computational resources compared to larger models.

*Industry-Wide Efforts*

Infosys is not alone in its efforts to enhance AI efficiency. Wipro, another major IT firm, has committed $1 billion to AI-driven solutions. “We started by ensuring AI is embedded into our own operations before deploying it for clients. Our Vega Studio has helped us build AI use cases across HR, legal, and manufacturing, optimizing performance,” said Sanjeev Jain, Chief Operating Officer of Wipro.

*Global GPU Demand and India’s Response*

The global AI boom has driven unprecedented demand for GPUs, with India heavily reliant on imports from companies like NVIDIA and AMD. In response, the Indian government is actively working to build domestic semiconductor capabilities to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

As part of the Rs 76,000 crore semiconductor mission, India is setting up chip fabrication plants in collaboration. While these plants will primarily focus on logic and memory chips, the country aims to develop its first indigenous GPU within three to five years.
