Iran has confirmed the purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi-35 fighter jets, marking the first time an Iranian official has publicly acknowledged the acquisition.
A senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards made this announcement on Monday. The deputy coordinator of the Khatam al-Anbia Central Headquarters stated that Iran regularly strengthens its air, ground, and naval forces by acquiring necessary military equipment. He also mentioned that the production of military equipment has been accelerated.
In November 2024, an Iranian news agency reported that Tehran had finalised the process of purchasing Russian fighter jets. Earlier this month, Iran and Russia signed a draft for a comprehensive strategic partnership, which included no details on arms sales but emphasized cooperation in military-technical fields.
The Iranian official did not disclose the number of Sukhoi-35 jets purchased from Russia. Additionally, the official issued a direct threat to Israel, saying that if the enemy takes foolish actions, it will face the bitter consequences of being struck by Iran’s missiles.
Currently, Iran’s Air Force possesses only a few dozen strike aircraft, including Russian jets as well as older US models purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Israel Arrests Two Reserve Soldiers For Spying For Iran
Meanwhile, Israel has arrested two reserve soldiers suspected of sending sensitive information about Israel’s Iron Dome defense system to Iran. The Israeli police revealed this on Monday. According to the Israeli state-owned Kan TV news, the two soldiers were allegedly paid thousands of US dollars by Iran. Both have confessed to it. They are expected to face charges of aiding the enemy during wartime, which in Israel can carry a life sentence or even the death penalty.
Earlier this month, Hamas claimed it had arrested several Palestinians in the Gaza Strip who were allegedly working for Israel’s Shin Bet intelligence agency and sharing information about Hamas’s top leaders’ locations.
