Juhi Babbar emerges as Cong likely pick for Gurugram mayor

Banking on the ‘Babbar’ magic from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress is considering Juhi Babbar as a potential candidate for the mayoral position in Gurugram.

Juhi, an active theatre personality, played a significant role in the election campaign of her father, former actor and senior Congress leader Raj Babbar, during the Lok Sabha elections. While Raj Babbar did not win, he and Juhi were successful in gaining substantial public support, significantly reducing the winning margin of MP Rao Inderjit Singh.

Impressed by their performance, the party had also made Raj Babbar a star campaigner in the Vidhan Sabha elections. With the position of Gurugram mayor being reserved for a BC-A category woman, Juhi Babbar has emerged as the party’s most winnable candidate.

“Gurugram is in a civic mess and people have seen no change even after choosing the BJP in both the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections. The Congress will sweep the civic elections. Juhi is the right candidate who fits the bill and will work towards people’s development,” said senior Congress leader from the district Pankaj Dawar.

Dawar further emphasised the party’s strong performance in Punjab’s civic elections and expressed confidence that Haryana is now ready for change. “The Millennium City is struggling with basic sanitation and infrastructure issues and the elected public representatives are least concerned. Congress workers have been working on the ground to bring relief to the people. We are going from person to person in the city to understand the aspirations of the people and finalise the candidates,” Dawar added.
