In a major leap toward transforming Mumbai’s suburban rail infrastructure, Khar Road Railway Station has become the first station to be fully revamped under the ambitious ₹950 crore Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A. The ₹85 crore renovation, executed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), introduces a host of commuter-friendly upgrades aimed at easing congestion and enhancing accessibility for over 1.6 lakh daily passengers.
🛤️ Key Features of the Khar Road Station Redevelopment
- 270-meter-long home platform to streamline passenger flow during peak hours
- Largest elevated deck in Western Railway’s suburban network, spanning 4,952 sq. meters, including a 31-meter skywalk
- Three lifts and five escalators, including a double-discharge escalator, for seamless vertical movement
- Tactile tiles and ramps to aid visually and mobility-impaired commuters
- Modern amenities: deluxe toilets, disability-friendly ticket counters, HVLS fans, improved lighting, and a redesigned façade
“This is a leap toward decongesting Mumbai’s rail network,” said MRVC Chairman Vilas Wadekar, highlighting the station’s transformation into a modern, inclusive transit hub.
🚆 MUTP-3A: A Citywide Rail Modernisation Drive
The Khar Road upgrade is part of a broader plan to modernise 17 high-footfall suburban stations across Mumbai, including Santacruz, Kandivli, Mira Road, Bhayandar, Vasai, and Nallasopara. These stations will receive similar enhancements such as:
- Elevated decks for smoother circulation
- Upgraded platforms and ticketing facilities
- Enhanced lighting, ventilation, and safety features
